I haven't had a chance to "meet" Victoria yet, but I really need to do that some time soon!

Thank you! I'm really glad you like them. I am happy I have another icon maker on my flist now. Your graphic community is wonderful. (I am in awe of that corkboard layout you made!) I'm just starting out making icons (I posted my first batch a little over a month ago) and it is nice to hear that they don't suck from someone who knows what they're doing.
Victoria is a hard companion to learn about because of how many of her episodes are lost.

I actually find icons to be really difficult to make! I work much better on a large-layout-size-scale, but occassionally I'll get some ideas for icons and jump in. (And then after I'm suitably frustrated, I'll leave them alone for another period of time!)
I never would have guessed you were new to iconning! I just flipped through some of your other posts. (I *adore* some of your Zoe icons!) I think you've got a great eye for cropping and using textures, and make good choices on colors. Would you want two suggestions? (Thought I'd better asking before offering them!)
Also, have you posted to
It makes me very sad how many of Two's serials (particularly with Victoria) have been lost. I have some of the "reconstructions" but the quality varies wildly (and is more often poor) so it takes some effort getting through them.

One suggestion -- consider playing with borders. I had a critique once where an icon-maker insisted each icon should have a "frame" to close the composition even if it's just a one pixel border all the way around. Now, I don't know that I agree with the idea that every icon needs a border, but you might want to experiment with using borders when you make your next batch, just to see if you like the effect.
My only other suggestion -- just be conscientious of your coloring. Overall, I think you do great work with color (especially with what I'm guessing is the colorization of black and white stills, something that can be surprisingly difficult). However, there are a couple icons (like #4 here) that get a little "bright," with a lot of contrast between light/dark resulting in the details disappearing and colors being a bit strong. I've seen two completely opposite reactions to such coloring -- people either like the effect of they don't. I don't have an opinion on it either way (I think techniques should be chosen based on the effect that you desire) but when I look at the entire group, I'd say your coloring of the other icons is stronger. Just something to be aware of!
I hope that helps a tiny bit. Really, your icons are quite lovely! You might also want to cross-post them to
I'm looking forward to seeing more icons (and other posts) from you on my flist!

Actually, all of these are colorizations. The batch previous to this was all colorizations, too. (I really like color. Currently I am wearing at least too shades bright enough to be called neon.) And I'll admit, oversaturation is a bad habit of mine. The first batch of icons I posted makes me wince now at how much I overused the brightness/contrast without any clue of how to use it properly.
Oh, and totally: #4 is not my strongest work, though part of the problem is I chose a bad image to begin with:
It doesn't have a lot of detail or shading, so the colors I applies look slapdash. Occasionally I can be stubborn, and I was determined to get an icon from that picture.
And yes, this totally helps! I really have been flying blind, and am happy to have someone give me their opinion. So far I've just been learning by doing, and sometimes reading people's icon tutorials when I see them. It is nice to actually talk about icon making.

I think you've improved with the oversaturation. And even with your early icons, well, I've seen some iconmakers who go way more extreme with the oversaturation. So as long as you're paying attention to it, that's what matters! I'm a big fan of color, too. My father used to paint and all his works deal with color progressions, so I think the interest in color is a little bit genetic for me!
And that is a rough base image to start with. (Cute though! Jamie and Victoria are so sweet!) I can stubborn about working with certain images, too... Often I give up and admit defeat when I get really frustrated!
I'm glad to be of help! It is fun discussing icon-art! May I ask what program you use when making them? (Photoshop?)

I'm glad you can tell that I've been working on keeping the oversaturation to a minimum. There is a hug difference between #8, which I cropped from one of the first colorizations I did, and #10, which is from the same image but toned down quite a bit.
I've been playing with borders a bit. I keep forgetting, saving the image and moving on to the next one without adding a border, but I do like the effect. The icons I have made today are here (http://s100.photobucket.com/albums/m13/creativescreenname/yet%20more%20icons/?start=all). (I'm not posting them yet, as I have a few friends who are picking out the ones they want first.) As you can see, my use of borders is sporadic, though a fair portion were made before we started this conversation.
My latest project is figuring out screencapping, to get the images I want. (I've been trying the automatic vlc screencapping, but am having difficulties.)

Yep, I can definitely see the difference there! So you've been colorizing the large images then cropping down for the icons? (Rather than cropping, then colorizing?)
Ahh, I see! I like the border on this one especially; I think the color really adds to it.
I don't know that I've used VLC for screencapping, other than the "snapshot" function. I have used the GOM Player and it has a couple options, including an "Advanced Screencapture" that allows you to select the file type, number of captures, duration of captures, etc. Not sure how it compares with VLC, but might be another option for you.

re: cropping and colorization, it depends on the image, and the amount of detail. if there are multiple people in the still, then i will color before cropping so i can use the same image to make multiple icons. that is only basic coloring, which i tweak once i've cropped.
thank you! yeah, i really liked how that one came out. (have you seen generation kill? it is really quite wonderful and superbly well done on all fronts: great writing, acting and direction. i highly recommend it.)
i think i'm getting to where i want to re: screencapping. i have only started trying it today, so it'll take me a few tries.

I see, makes sense, coloring the whole image if you want to use it multiple times. Saves work in the end, I imagine!
I have not seen Generation Kill, but I've definitely seen it recommended on my flist previously. I tend to adopt new shows during the summer, so perhaps I'll check it out then!
Ah, that's good! Glad to hear it's working out!
